you hit the nail on the head. it is difficult to moderate the comments and separate real from spam but in my opinion thats just part of the blogging business.

Some of the spam comments are getting more clever with time. The way I work it is if the comment itself has nothing to do with the post then I remove it/spam it. I may be a little harsh with how I treat comments but I want my readers to have an uninterrupted viewing experience and not have to wade through hundreds of useless junk.

With Akismet installed, I don't see 95% of the spam that comes through and Wordpress is doing a great job of giving me the opportunity to moderate before its published.

People are always looking for a way to push their own blog and hopefully increase the traffic stats and on the surface dofollow comments seem like an easy way to obtain this goal. Problem for the blog author is the hassle of having to moderate their comments to make sure that only the "real" comments make it through.

ya know.. since my blog isn't that busy yet .. giving people dofollow hasn't really become a problem. most spam are being caught by the filtering I have set up but I imagine as my traffic increases which it is it will become a problem.

I'll probably increase the number of comments you need to make in order to have dofollow.. right now its set at one until I get abused :P

Sometimes I let some questionable ones slide like the first comment in this post. he had some style to it.. added a personal touch and did include my blog in his search engine .. :)

lol, that is great. Very up front and honest of him =P
I was dofollow for a bit, but got frustrate with some of the comments I was getting. My comment volume went up, but the quality went done. It was a bunch of comments like

"Great site. Will bookmark, thanks"

I honestly had no problem handing out dofollowed anchored links. I didn't restrict the anchor people used or anything. I just wanted people to leave a legit comment, or at least give me enough content make up for it. I personally try to leave a significant comment, that actually adds to the convo and provides the blogger with a nice chunk of quality content. The least I can do for the link =P

SEO Zombies last blog post..<a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/seozombie/~3/350966926/" rel="nofollow">What Would You Like?</a>
