Spammer Thanks me for DoFollow Support
Had a nice laugh when I got home from work this evening and figured I’d share. As you can see from the blue diagonal stripe in the left corner of my blog I support removing rel=’nofollow’ from comments left on my Wordpress site. My stance on that just as anyone else who does this is that if you take the time to visit my site, interact and leave opinions that you should receive credit for your time in the form of a link back to your site that will be followed by search engines.
Just above the comment form on each individual post there is also a brief note that states what I mentioned above; support for dofollow. I use a plugin to accomplish this because it allows me to set rules for the dofollow such as first-time commenters receive rel=’nofollow’ but the 2nd time it is removed and other settings I can play around with. Well due to the success Im having with Akismet blocking spam I don’t feel the need to have any other spam protection on Wordpress as of yet. All spam comments and trackbacks are caught by Akismet without fail however I do look to see what gets caught just in case someone legitimate makes its way through.
Tonight in my Akismet spam queue was the following kind “thank you” from some bottom feeder spammer and I almost pissed myself laughing.
The dude took the time to thank me for providing a site that removes nofollow and provided a link back to his lame forum. Did he think that just because he thanked me I’d moderate that shit and approve it? I mean that is a really sad attempt at spamming. I give him a 0 for lack of creativity and a 0 for effort.
Come on already if he’s going to take the time to actually type out a comment thanking me for what he thinks is a safe haven to spam why not read the damn article and write something constructive? In most cases Akismet would catch it anyway based on some other criterea and I’d still be writing this post

Hey hey…. that’s great that you support dofollow and that spammer is hilarious! I have added you to my Dofollow Diver, dofollow blogs search engine.
lol, that is great. Very up front and honest of him =P
I was dofollow for a bit, but got frustrate with some of the comments I was getting. My comment volume went up, but the quality went done. It was a bunch of comments like
“Great site. Will bookmark, thanks”
I honestly had no problem handing out dofollowed anchored links. I didn’t restrict the anchor people used or anything. I just wanted people to leave a legit comment, or at least give me enough content make up for it. I personally try to leave a significant comment, that actually adds to the convo and provides the blogger with a nice chunk of quality content. The least I can do for the link =P

ya know.. since my blog isn’t that busy yet .. giving people dofollow hasn’t really become a problem. most spam are being caught by the filtering I have set up but I imagine as my traffic increases which it is it will become a problem.
I’ll probably increase the number of comments you need to make in order to have dofollow.. right now its set at one until I get abused
Sometimes I let some questionable ones slide like the first comment in this post. he had some style to it.. added a personal touch and did include my blog in his search engine ..
People are always looking for a way to push their own blog and hopefully increase the traffic stats and on the surface dofollow comments seem like an easy way to obtain this goal. Problem for the blog author is the hassle of having to moderate their comments to make sure that only the “real” comments make it through.

you hit the nail on the head. it is difficult to moderate the comments and separate real from spam but in my opinion thats just part of the blogging business.
Some of the spam comments are getting more clever with time. The way I work it is if the comment itself has nothing to do with the post then I remove it/spam it. I may be a little harsh with how I treat comments but I want my readers to have an uninterrupted viewing experience and not have to wade through hundreds of useless junk.
With Akismet installed, I don’t see 95% of the spam that comes through and Wordpress is doing a great job of giving me the opportunity to moderate before its published.
